The War Remembrance Cross was instituted in the Netherlands by Royal Decree No. 6 of 16 March 1944 and replaced the old Ereteken voor Important Krijgsbedrijven. The latter decoration was awarded for special campaigns but the War Memorial Cross was a much more general decoration for all those who had served in the armed forces or in the merchant fleet, fishing fleet or civil aviation during the war against Germany, Japan and their allies.
