K.I.A. file of a Gefreiter who served in Denmark, France and Russia
This is the estate of the fallen Gefreiter: Otto Friedrich Heinrich Wettwer.
The legacy consists of a complete Wehrpass and a photo album with 100 photos.
Born on 2 June 1910 in Hamburg, Otto was drafted as a conscript in 1938 and his active service then started in February 1940. From then on, he would become involved in the attack on Denmark and the occupation of Jutland. The album therefore includes many photos of this. After his stay in Denmark, he was transferred to France in September 1940, where he would become part of the 4.(MG)-Kompanie Inf. Regiment 502 in charge of defending the Atlantic coast. Again, many photos of this are included in the album.
From June 1941, he would participate in Operation Barbarossa where he would eventually die at the front. Otto died in Russia on 6 August 1941, near Demjansk. Broadly speaking, this area can be designated as the place between what was then Leningrad and Moscow. It was 7 weeks after the start of Operation Barbarossa in which Otto had participated from the beginning, he would never see the home front again.
